August 1, 2025 - As AI models grow increasingly powerful, experts warn it is becoming harder to accurately assess their true intelligence. The latest AI Index report from Stanford University highlights rapid improvements in generative AI and large language models, which now produce outputs that blur the lines between human and machine creativity.

Russell Wald, Director of the Stanford AI Index, explained, the accelerating performance of AI systems complicates traditional evaluation methods. He cited examples such as Midjourney’s text-to-image generation, which has dramatically improved in realism and nuance over recent years, challenging benchmarks and human judgement alike.

This phenomenon reflects broader trends in AI governance and ethics, as stakeholders grapple with defining meaningful metrics for AI capabilities. The surge in generative AI and neural networks demands new frameworks for transparency, accountability, and responsible AI deployment. It also intensifies global competition to lead in AI infrastructure and foundational models that underpin these advances.

Our view: The difficulty in judging AI intelligence underscores the need for evolving evaluation standards that go beyond surface-level performance. Responsible AI development must prioritise interpretability and ethical considerations to ensure these powerful systems serve society effectively. This challenge also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping AI’s future trajectory.
