AI Protection: Safeguarding Jobs Today and Against AGI/ASI

The advent of artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming workplaces across sectors. But the deeper challenge looms: if Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or even Artificial Superintelligence (ASI) becomes a reality, many current assumptions about work, value, and human roles may be upended. This article explores a forward-looking and multi-layered strategy to protect jobs, dignity, and economic stability in the face of current and future AI disruption.

1. Recognise the scale of disruption
Narrow AI is already automating administrative, analytic, and repetitive tasks in finance, law, marketing, and more. Some studies estimate that up to 70 % of workers’ existing time on tasks could be susceptible to automation [9]. As AI capabilities improve, roles once thought β€œsafe” may shrink or shift. When AGI or ASI arrive, human labour might be outperformed not just in specific tasks, but more broadly, pressuring wages toward zero and concentrating economic power in owners of AI systems [11].

2. Strengthen labour rights, transparency, and worker voice
To ensure AI does not become a tool of opaque exploitation, governance must embed democratic principles in workplaces. This means requiring that employers disclose algorithmic decision-making systems (hiring, firing, scheduling), allow human review and appeal, and ban systems that operate without human oversight [3]. Workers’ rights to bargain collectively should explicitly include bargaining over AI deployment and surveillance [5]. Broad principles, such as the White House’s guidance on AI in the workplace, endorse awareness, oversight, transparent deployment, ethical development, and support during transitions [4].

3. Invest in reskilling, complementary skills, and adaptive career paths
No regulation alone can fully insulate all workers from displacement; moreover, some disruption is inevitable. The goal is to move people toward roles that are complementary to AI or resilient to automation. Research suggests skills such as leadership, strategic judgment, managing AI systems, insight, creativity, and meta-skills (learning, adaptation) will increase in value [1]. Governments and firms should subsidise lifelong learning, modular credentials, and portable training [9]. Also, public investment in β€œhuman-complementary” technologies (i.e. tools that amplify human creativity rather than replace it) is crucial [6].

4. Reimagine economic models, redistribution & social contracts
If AGI drives wages toward zero, then preserving jobs may not suffice. New economic structures become essential. Proposals include progressive AI/robot taxes, Universal Basic Income (UBI), public or cooperative ownership of AI infrastructure, and redistribution of AI-generated surplus [11]. The rise of AGI might fuel β€œtechno-feudalism,” where ownership of intelligence becomes the primary source of wealth; to combat this, redistribution mechanisms and governance of AI must be democratised [12]. Redistribution is not just moral β€” it sustains demand in an economy where human incomes shrink.

5. Govern AI globally: safety, caps, treaties
Advanced AI requires oversight beyond individual companies or nations. Some key measures: establishing a Multinational AGI Consortium (MAGIC) to provide democratic oversight; imposing global compute caps to restrain runaway model scale; and enforcing gating mechanisms so no system is deployed without rigorous safety proofs [10]. These tools can prevent an unregulated arms race in superintelligence and preserve the possibility that societies remain in control rather than being overtaken by AI trajectories [10].

6. Principles, caution, and political strategy
An important risk is that speculative narratives about AGI are used to delay present-day protections or deregulate prematurely. Indeed, some proposals for moratoria on state-level AI laws would remove legal tools now available to protect workers [2]. Sound policy must be grounded in current evidence while anticipating future risks. Institutions must stay flexible, inclusive, and accountable. Civil society, labour unions, technologists, and impacted communities must be central in shaping AI governance. Human experience should not be footnote β€” it must remain the centre [7].

Summary: Protecting work from AI, AGI, and beyond demands a layered, forward-looking strategy. We must reinforce labour rights and transparency; invest heavily in reskilling and human-complementary roles; rethink how surplus gets distributed (UBI, taxation, cooperative ownership); and build global governance to prevent runaway intelligence. Far from clinging to old job structures, the real goal is preserving human agency, dignity, choice, and shared prosperity even in a world where machines may outperform humans at most tasks.
